Grommet Guide — Sizes, Styles and Installation
A grommet is a circular insert that fits into a pre-drilled hole in the tabletop, providing a clean cable pass-through. Here's how to choose the right grommet and install it.
Grommet Types
1. Standard Grommet
Most common
Fits a standard 2.5″ (63mm) hole. Includes a removable cap for a clean look when not in use. Available in black and white to match tabletop color.
High cable volume
Larger diameter (3.15″ / 80mm) with a split cover. Passes multiple thick cables simultaneously — good for setups with many device connections.
Pre-Drilled vs Drilling Your Own
Most Progressive Desk MDF laminate and bamboo tabletops come with a single pre-drilled 2.5″ grommet hole, typically positioned 6–8″ from the right rear corner. If you need a second hole, or if your top has no pre-drilled hole (solid wood, epoxy, some 42×24 tops), you can drill your own:
- Mark the hole center with a pencil — avoid the area directly over the crossbeam bracket
- Use a 2.5″ hole saw (standard) or 3.15″ hole saw (large grommet)
- Drill from the top surface down — place scrap wood beneath the tabletop to prevent blowout on the underside
- Sand the hole edges smooth before inserting the grommet
Installing the Grommet
The grommet has two parts: a top ring and a bottom ring (or clip). Push the bottom ring up through the hole from underneath.
Press the top cap down into the hole from the top surface. The two parts click together and clamp onto the tabletop. No adhesive needed.
Thread your cables through the grommet opening. Replace the brushed cap or rubber flap for a clean look when cables are in place.
