How Should I Store a PA Linear Actuator Long-Term?

Proper storage prevents corrosion, lubricant degradation, and seal deterioration. Follow these guidelines if you are storing actuators for more than a few weeks before installation or during seasonal downtime.

Ideal Storage Conditions

  • Temperature:–40 °C to +85 °C (see storage range on your model's datasheet). Avoid environments with large daily temperature swings that promote condensation cycles.
  • Humidity:Keep below 90% relative humidity, non-condensing. Damp environments corrode motor brush contacts and steel rod surfaces.
  • Position:Store fully retracted. Extended strokes leave the polished rod exposed to dust and corrosion. Keep the actuator horizontal to prevent grease from migrating to one end of the gearbox.
  • Packaging:Keep in original packaging or wrap the rod end in a plastic bag secured with a rubber band to protect the rod and seal from dust.

Pre-Storage Checklist

  • Retract actuator to fully retracted position before storage
  • Wipe rod clean with a lint-free cloth; apply a thin film of silicone grease to the rod
  • For outdoor-rated (IP54+) units used in wet environments, rinse with fresh water and dry before storage
  • Disconnect all electrical connections and tape or cap the wire ends to prevent oxidation
  • Label the unit with model number, stroke, and voltage for easy identification later
  • Store indoors, away from direct sunlight and UV exposure (UV degrades rubber seals)

Returning to Service After Storage

1. Inspect rod and housing

Check for surface corrosion on the rod (fine pitting, rust spots). Light surface oxidation can be polished off. Deep pitting or heavy rust may affect the front seal and require seal replacement.

2. Run the actuator unloaded

Before applying load, cycle the actuator through its full stroke 2–3 times at no load. This redistributes the gearbox grease and lets you listen for any unusual sounds from a stiff or dry gearbox.

3. Re-lubricate if stored over 12 months

Grease degrades over time. If stored for over 12 months, follow the lubrication procedure in the Maintenance & Lubrication article before putting the unit back into service.
