How to Install Under-Desk Accessories

Under-desk accessories — cable trays, drawers, CPU holders — are best installed before the desk is placed in its final position. Here's the recommended order and what to watch for.

Recommended Installation Order

Install accessories before routing final cables and before pushing the desk against a wall. This gives you access to the underside of the tabletop from all angles.

  1. Cable tray (mounts to the crossbeam or tabletop underside — do this first as it sets cable routing)
  2. Under-desk drawer (mounts to tabletop underside — requires drill or pre-drilled holes)
  3. CPU holder (clamps to crossbeam or frame leg — no drilling needed)
  4. Keyboard tray (mounts via track to underside — requires measurement for clearance)
  5. Power bar or surge protector (mounts to frame leg or crossbeam)

Cable Tray

Most Progressive Desk cable trays clamp to the underside of the crossbeam using the provided brackets — no drilling required. Route power cables and monitor cables through the tray from the back edge, then down the frame leg toward the floor.

💡 Weight limit: Don't overload the cable tray with heavy power strips. Most trays are rated for cables and light accessories only — check the tray product spec for weight capacity.

Under-Desk Drawer

The under-desk drawer mounts directly to the underside of the tabletop. Mark mounting hole positions before drilling. Use the included template if provided, or measure carefully to ensure the drawer clears the crossbeam when opening. Weight capacity is typically 5–10 lbs — for stationery and small items only.

CPU Holder

CPU holders clamp to the frame crossbeam or a leg column using a clamp bracket — no drilling. They typically accommodate towers up to a set width (usually 3″–8″). Check the specific holder for your tower's dimensions before purchasing.

Checking for Conflicts

Before finalizing all accessory positions, move the desk through its full height range. Verify that:

  • The CPU holder doesn't contact the desk legs at any height
  • The cable tray doesn't pull cables taut at maximum height
  • The drawer opens freely at sitting height without hitting anything below
